Sensory Assessments

A Sensory Assessment helps you understand your sensory preferences and manage them so you can be at your best. Our sensory systems are important for taking in information to our brain from our daily life and deciding what to do with it. These systems are an essential part of how we respond to our environment and the world.

With a Sensory Assessment, you'll gain an understanding of how you avoid or seek sensory stimulation. We'll create a sensory profile and look at your sensory processing so you can optimise your routine and environment to meet your needs. Finding your balance will help you manage everyday sensory inputs and stay engaged so you can achieve your goals more easily.

ADHD Pre-Assessments

Beehyve’s pre-assessment looks at whether your experiences align with the official criteria for ADHD according to the DSM-5. This is a diagnostic manual used by healthcare professionals.

Beehyve’s pre-assessment can help you decide if you’d like to access care such as coaching. It can also help you choose whether to pursue an official diagnosis. It is particularly useful to:

  • find validation and understanding of your experience

  • identify which symptoms may be impacting your life

  • avoid having ADHD immediately noted on your medical records.

Beehyve’s pre-assessment can help you decide if you’d like to access care such as coaching or counselling. It can also help you consider whether to pursue an official diagnosis.

Some GPs and Psychiatrists may accept it as a referral, but you should check with them first.

Our pre-assessment involves an interview with a professional who knows what to look out for when it comes to ADHD. At Beehyve, we have a range of specialists who are experienced in running these pre-assessments.

The interview takes about 1.5 hours, and you can do it online with us from anywhere in New Zealand. Afterwards, our practitioner will write a report that they will share with you following the session. We may also be able to connect you to a private psychiatrist through Beehyve after completing a pre-assessment at an additional cost.

The 2025 total cost for the pre assessment is $265. Depending on the outcome you seek, it may be the most cost-effective approach to addressing any symptoms that are holding you back.

At Beehyve, we have diagnostic assessment pathway for medication
  • Beehyves diagnostic assessment is the process we follow to determine whether you meet the criteria for one or more diagnostic categories in ADHD.

An appointment is made to see a Beehyve psychiatrists or GPSI’s with psychiatric oversight, who will conduct a comprehensive differential assessments to accurately identify ADHD and check for other potential co-occurring conditions. This ensures you get an accurate diagnosis, and appropriate referral for conditions we suspect but aren’t trained to diagnose.

Whether you see a GPSI or psychiatrist may be a combination of your preference, complexity and wait times.

Different practitioners have different requirements prior to your meeting them. Our psychiatrists require a pre-assessment to be completed before an appointment can be made. Some may require you to complete ‘collateral’ which may mean completing some extra forms.

  • A diagnosis is the outcome of the diagnostic assessments.

If a diagnosis for ADHD is completed, one of Beehyve’s psychiatrists or GPSI’s with psychiatric oversight will discuss medications with you and may issue a special authority.

  • Treatment can start at any time. Even before you get a diagnosis, you can work with a coach, therapist, naturopath and more to help you move towards the outcomes you want.

However if you choose medication to help manage symptoms this can only happen post diagnosis.

You’ll need to work with a medical professional to find the correct medication and dose that works for your body and this process is called titration. At Beehyve this may begin with the psychiatrist or GPSI who diagnosed you; or you may be referred to a Beehyve GP or your own GP. GPs with proficient knowledge of ADHD medication can help with or complete titration, and you will find these professionals at Beehyve.
