Navigating the shortage of ADHD medication
Experiencing difficulty getting your methylphenidate prescription (Ritalin, Rubifen, Concerta) filled? You're not alone.
The reality of the shortage
New Zealand faces an ongoing ADHD medication shortage.
This is a challenging time for our community. For many of us, losing access to ADHD medication is like having glasses, then getting them taken away.
If you are feeling overwhelmed and don’t know what to do without medication. Reach out and we can guide you.
What do you do if you can't get your meds?
If your usual medication is unavailable, here’s what to do:
First, talk to your GP: This is the best first step for support.
Check your Special Authority: If you have a current Special Authority from a psychiatrist or paediatrician (most people with a current or recently expired Special Authority should not need to renew it), your GP may be able to switch you to a different medication brand.
Email your specialist: Because the current shortage is a well-known problem, your psychiatrist or pediatrician might be willing to adjust your prescription without an appointment.
Explore options: Some GPs may prefer specialist input to adjust ADHD prescriptions. If you encounter this, or need quick support, our clinic can manage medication changes.
Navigating ADHD when medication is unavailable
It's understandable that not having your usual medication is frustrating. Let's focus on what you can do.
Lean on your support system: Talk things through with the people you trust.
Manage your lifestyle: We know it’s hard work and you may not want to hear this, but good sleep, a healthy diet and moving your body are proven to help manage ADHD symptoms and general health.
Nurture community: Connect with others who understand, for example on the ADHD NZ community for Adults with ADHD Facebook group.
Make sure someone is in your corner: Sometimes, you need a professional. Our directory can help you find independent coaches, counsellors, therapists and more.
Join a workshop: Beehyve Health regularly runs 6-week workshops, with two starting in May 2025. These are cheaper than one-on-one coaching ($399 for six weeks) and can help you learn tools and strategies to manage ADHD – whether you’ve been diagnosed or haven’t yet. Whether you're taking meds, can’t access or choose not to. (If your keen to join a workshops, but can’t do May, contact us for a future booking).
Think about what might help: Think about your specific challenges and what strategies might offer relief, including those that helped before your diagnosis and medication.
Tools: We've gathered a range of resources that you might find beneficial.
Encourage yourself: It’s not always easy but do the best you can for yourself; get the best support you can.
