Counselling for the ADHD brain
ADHD counselling is a supportive journey to help you understand your unique brain.
A Beehyve counsellor creates a safe space to talk about your traits and the emotional weight of living with ADHD. And we do it from a lived experience perspective which makes the support we offer feel more real, relatable and different from traditional therapists.
Working together, you'll learn to identify and shift the thought patterns that influence your behaviour.
Beehyve therapy helps you live a more fulfilling life by embracing who you are.
The counsellor's toolbox
The therapeutic process is built on a strong and trusting relationship with your practitioner. We use a variety of approaches and we get that no one way is right. You’re unique and we work with you on that level.
Each therapist has a different tool set, and uses them in different ways. Many of our therapists are eclectic, which means we might intermingle a variety of tools to support you.
Some of the tools that we might use are:
Talking and listening: There’s a reason counsellors encourage you to talk about your experiences, feelings, and challenges. Hearing those internal thoughts out loud can make a big difference. Our job is to help you navigate those experiences, feelings and challenges, to help you move towards the outcomes you wish to achieve.
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): Helps you to make space for tough thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while focusing on the things that really matter to you and taking steps toward a life that feels meaningful.
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT): A form of talk therapy that teaches you about the impact of your emotions and behaviours, and potentially how to manage them to help you achieve outcomes.
Solution-focused brief therapy: A short-term approach that helps you work toward one clear goal at a time by building on what’s already going well, rather than digging into past problems.
Narrative therapy: Helps you understand and reshape the stories you tell yourself so you can separate your narrative from your challenges and identify n strengths more clearly. This allows you to work towards a more meaningful life with narratives that empower you.
Beehyve’s practitioners are also trained in a range of other approaches that as we work together we’ll figure out what works best for you.
Medication works alongside counselling
Medication provides stability, creating a mental space where you can focus. When ADHD medication is active in the body, it can enhance focus, attention, and impulse control—creating a window of opportunity where individuals are better able to engage with and benefit from skill-building practices like coaching, counselling, and other therapeutic approaches. This gives you the clarity to practice new strategies.
But here’s the key: counselling is still incredibly valuable on its own. With or without medication, a counsellor can help you.
Understanding past pain
If you’ve been told you’re lazy or unmotivated, a late ADHD diagnosis can feel like a deep sense of grief for what might have been.
A Beehyve counsellor may help you rewrite this story. We can’t forget the past, or change it, but we can move to a place where it doesn’t have the same impact in your life. It’s a powerful moment of reframing that can help you move forward.
Working on relationships
Even the strongest relationships can be strained at times, and in these moments, therapy can be a game-changer.
Our counsellors get the impact of ADHD and neurodiversity on relationships where one or multiple people live with traits. This means we are uniquely positioned to support you through all stages of a relationship, from starting a new connection to navigating changes, challenges or a breakup.
By working with one person, or multiple people in a relationship, we can help by addressing the unique challenges of a mixed-neurotype relationship, helping those involved understand and reframe ADHD behaviours.
This doesn’t apply simply to romantic relationships, but can also apply to familial relationships, friendships, working relationships and more.
